TransLink

TransLink is Metro Vancouver’s regional transportation authority, responsible for planning and managing the transportation network that keeps the region moving.

While TransLink is often associated with buses, SkyTrain, and SeaBus, my role as a Digital Content & Communications Intern focused on a less expected side of its transportation portfolio: cycling. Supporting the Major Bikeway Network, I helped communicate TransLink’s work toward connecting bikeways across Metro Vancouver and encouraging cycling as a practical, active, and sustainable way to get around.

What is the Major Bikeway Network?

The Major Bikeway Network (MBN) is a long-term initiative to create a more connected network of bikeways across Metro Vancouver, making it easier for people to travel between communities by bike.

As a Digital Content & Communications Intern, I brought two perspectives to this work: my experience as a Gen Z marketer familiar with current social media trends, and my academic interest in sustainability and health. I combined these interests to create approachable content that introduced cycling to a wider audience, covering topics such as different types of bike lanes, cycling essentials, and the health and environmental benefits of choosing to bike.

Social Media Reels

My biggest question was: How do I make transportation planning interesting on social media? I approached this challenge by transforming technical cycling information into short, engaging videos designed to educate while capturing viewers’ attention.

From explaining different types of bike lanes and how to use bike lockers to sharing cycling etiquette on transit and producing interview-style content, each reel made unfamiliar topics more approachable. Using Adobe Premiere Pro, I edited each video with colour grading, sequencing, and captions for accessibility, while adapting current short-form video trends to educational storytelling. Created for both TransLink’s social media and street planning teams, these videos helped introduce the Major Bikeway Network in a way that felt relevant, accessible, and engaging to Metro Vancouver residents.

The Buzzer Articles

Writing about the Major Bikeway Network came with a unique challenge: introducing a growing initiative that many Metro Vancouver residents were hearing about for the first time. With limited existing public-facing content to build from, I had to ensure each article was first and foremost accurate, while still making transportation planning accessible and interesting to everyday readers.

To achieve this, I collaborated with the Street Planning team to verify technical information and worked closely with the Social Media team to shape each story around TransLink’s brand voice. This allowed me to translate detailed transportation concepts into approachable, conversational stories that could build familiarity with the Major Bikeway Network and encourage readers to see cycling as part of how they move around the region.
